Equine Color Genetics
When having your mare bred by one of our Homozygous Black, Friesian Stallions, below is some information that will help you to be able to know in some cases, and predict, in other cases, what color your foal(s) will be.
Since our stallions are Homozygous Black, you automatically know what color your foal(s) by them cannot be, and that is 'Red'. Our stallions cannot throw a 'Red' foal. No Chestnuts, Sorrels, Red Roans, Palominos, etc...
It definitely helps to know your mare's actual color genetics. As you will see, simply knowing the color of your mare only gives you a broad selection of options. Knowing the color genetic make up of your mare with regard to 'Red Factor', 'Agouti', 'Silver Dilution' genes, etc... will allow you to really target in on your foal's color probabilities.
And regardless of the ultimate color of your foal by one of our stallions, your foal is sure to have the very best of Friesian personality, conformation & movement. When it comes to these most important charactersistics, what you breed in, you don't have to train in!
We'll begin with 'BLACK' mares:
Black Mare with Red Factor (EE) is homozygous black, foal result is 100% Homozygous Black.
Black Mare with Red Factor (Ee) is a 'Red Carrier', foal result is 100% Black, but only 50% Homozy.Black.
Bay Mares:
Bay Mare with Red Factor (Ee) & Agouti Heterozygous (Aa), foal's chances are 50% Black, 50% Bay.
Bay Mare with Red Factor (Ee) & Agouti Homozygous (AA), foals are 100% Bay.
Bay Mare with Red Factor (EE) & Agouti Heterozygous (Aa), foal's chances are 50% Black, 50% Bay.
Bay Mare with Red Factor (EE) & Agouti Homozygous (AA), foals are 100% Bay.
Chestnut/Sorrel Mares (Referred to as 'Red' mares):
C/S Mare with Non-Agouti (aa) & Silver Dilution of 'Non-Silver Carrier', foal result is 100% Black.
C/S Mare with Non-Agouti (aa) & SD Heterozygous (nZ), foal's chances 50% Silver Dapple, 50% Black.
C/S Mare with Non-Agouti (aa) & SD Homozygous (ZZ), foal result is 100% Silver Dapple.
C/S Mare with Agouti Heterozygous (Aa) & Non-Silver Carrier, foal's options are 50% Black, 50% Bay.
C/S Mare with Agouti Heterozygous (Aa) & SD Heterozygous (nZ), foal's options are 25% Silver Dapple, 25% Silver Bay, 25% Black, 25% Bay.
C/S Mare with Agouti Heterozygous (Aa) & SD Homozygous (ZZ), foal's options are 50% Silver Dapple, 50% Silver Bay.
C/S Mare with Agouti Homozygous (AA) & Non-Silver Carrier, foal result is 100% Bay.
C/S Mare with Agouti Homozygous (AA) & Heterozygous (nZ), foal's options are 50% Silver Bay, 50% Bay

Palomino Mares:
Palomino Mare Non-Agouti (aa) & Non-Silver Carrier, foal's options are 50% Black, 50% Smokey Black.
Palomino Mare Non-Agouti (aa) & Red Carrier (Ee), foal's options are 25% Smokey Black, 25% Black, 25% Silver Smokey Black, 25% Silver Dapple.
Palomino Mare Non-Agouti (aa) & Red Carrier (Ee), foal's options are 50% Silver Smokey Black, 50% Silver Dapple.
Palomino Mare Agouti Heterozygous (Aa) & Non-Silver Carrier, foal's options are 25% Black, 25% Smokey Black, 25% Buckskin, 25% Bay.
Palomino Mare Agouti Heterozygous (Aa) & SD Heterozygous (nZ), foals options are 12.5% Black, 12.5% Smokey Black, 12.5% Silver Smokey Black, 12.5% Silver Dapple, 12.5% Silver Buckskin, 12.5% Silver Bay, 12.5% Buckskin, 12.5% Bay.
